China's steel product exports up 14.9 pct month-on-month in April
Shanghai. May 9. INTERFAX-CHINA - China's steel product exports jumped
14.9 percent month-on-month to 4.78 million tons in April 2008,
according to preliminary statistics released today by the General
Administration of Customs.
However, China's net steel product exports dropped 40.70 percent year-
on-year to 3.28 million tons in April.
In the first four months of the year, steel product exports fell by 23.9
percent year-on-year to 16.17 million tons.
China imported 42.85 million tons of iron ore in April, representing a
monthly increase of 20.10 percent, while iron ore imports for the
January to April period lifted 15.2 percent year-on-year to 153.49
million tons.
The country's growing iron ore imports last month can be attributed to a
rush of orders before the Indian monsoon season, set to fall in late
May, which will temporarily boost iron ore prices. More than 20 percent
of China's imported iron ore comes from India.
China's average reference CIF price for grade 63.5 percent Indian iron
ore fluctuated between $183 per ton and $186 per ton during the week of
April 28 to May 2.
The below tables show China's imports and exports of steel products,
billet, coke and iron ore in April and the first four months of 2008.
