Nearly 90 snails to be taken to ISS for experiments
BAIKONUR. May 8 (Interfax-AVN) - A Progress M-64 supply craft will
fly nearly 90 snails to the International Space Station (ISS), a source
at the Baikonur cosmodrome told Interfax on Thursday.
"About 90 snails will be sent to the International Space Station to
be used in studying the impact of zero gravity on living beings," the
source said.
The snails will spend about five months on the ISS and return to
earth in October aboard the Soyuz TMA 12 with the crew of the 17th long-
duration expedition, he said.
Preparations are continuing at Baikonur to launch a Soyuz-U rocket
with a Progress M-64 supply ship.
The nose cone will be assembled in Assembly and Test Block 254 on
Thursday.
"After the nose cone has been assembled, preparations will begin
for moving it to the assembly and test block at Site 112 to be connected
with the rocket body," the source said.
The Soyuz-U and Progress M-64 will be moved to the launch pad of
Site 1 on May 11 and are due to be launched at 00:22 a.m. on May 15, the
source said.
