Additional Russian peacekeepers in Abkhazia monitoring area - DefenseMinistry statement (Part 2)
MOSCOW. May 8 (Interfax-AVN) - The additional peacekeeping forces
that were recently sent into the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone are
monitoring the situation along the administrative border between Georgia
and Abkhazia and in the Kodori Gorge area, the Russian Defense Ministry
said in a statement.
"Over the past twenty-four hours, the peacekeeping forces that have
been deployed in the Tkvarcheli district of Abkhazia have been
monitoring the conflicting parties' observance of the deal on a
ceasefire and separation of forces and preventing the movement of the
conflicting parties' armed forces, special groups, and uncontrolled
armed groups in the security zone and in the zone of limited armed
forces," it said.
"In addition, the peacekeepers monitored the terrain along the
administrative border between Georgia and Abkhazia and in the Kodori
Gorge area," it says.
Russia sent an additional 450 paratroopers into the Tkvarcheli
district at the end of April.
The personnel not involved in the service at the observation
outposts are continuing to set up a park for combat vehicles, mess
halls, a weapons and ammunition depot, fences, and orderly rooms.
"The command of the battalion tactic group continued to examine the
patrolling routes," it said.
