Chinese leader gives interview with Interfax, VGTRK before visiting Moscow

Chinese President and Secretary General of the Chinese Communist Party Hu Jintao has given an interview with Interfax First Deputy General Director Renat Abdullin and Deputy Chairman of the Russian State TV and Radio Corporation (VGTRK) Andrei Bystritsky in Beijing on Friday.

This was Hu's first interview with media outlets after his election as Chinese president.

In the course of the interview, Abdullin informed Hu about the information project Interfax-China, which Interfax News Agency is implementing together with a leading Russian bank, Vneshtorgbank. The project is intended to distribute information about important events taking place in China throughout Russia and the world.

The Chinese leader said his country attaches great significance to informational contacts between China and Russia and welcomes their expansion.

In the course of an hour-long interview, Hu Jintao answered questions about prospects of development in Russian-Chinese bilateral relations, the situation in Iraq and on the Korean Peninsula and measures the Chinese leadership is taking to contain severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

The interview will be circulated through Interfax channels and the state-run television network RTR in the run-up to Hu's visit to Russia, which is to begin in late May.
