Interfax-Azerbaijan news agency established

The Interfax Information Services Group has announced the establishment of a new information agency, Interfax-Azerbaijan.
Interfax and AzPetrol, the co-founder of Interfax-Azerbaijan, have signed the agreement on the creation of the new agency.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has welcomed the establishment of Interfax-Azerbaijan. Speaking in the Kremlin following talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart Heydar Aliyev on January 25, Putin said: "I must note with satisfaction that a new information agency, Interfax-Azerbaijan, was set up just before Heydar Aliyev's visit to Moscow." During negotiations with the Azerbaijani president in the Kremlin, much attention was devoted to "interaction in the mass media sphere," Putin said.
Putin thanked the Azerbaijani leadership "for its attention to cooperation in the humanitarian sphere and in the sphere of supporting the Russian language."
Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev said he had "been in favor of opening an Interfax-Azerbaijan news agency in Azerbaijan from the very start."
"I fully support this project. Interfax is renowned for its objectivity and professionalism. It is one of the first really independent media outlets to have emerged in Russia. I hope that the establishment of Interfax-Azerbaijan will be instrumental in making information from Azerbaijan more readily available to political and business figures. This will be beneficial to our country and will help increase our ties with other countries."
Aliyev noted that Interfax has acquired "a good and reliable partner" in Azerbaijan. "AzPetrol, Interfax's partner in this project, is a good and strong company. It is the leading oil and petroleum product retailer. I am convinced that your companies will manage to set up a good new agency," he said.

Mikhail Komissar, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Interfax Group, for his part described the founding of Interfax-Azerbaijan as "one more step towards the re-creation of a single information expanse within the CIS." Komissar recalled that the Interfax-Ukraine, Interfax-Kazakhstan and Interfax-Zapad (Belarus) news agencies had already made their mark and established themselves as leading information providers in their respective countries.
Komissar also stressed that prompt and quality sociopolitical and business information for subscribers around the world "will undoubtedly enhance economic relations between Azerbaijan and its partners in Russia, the CIS and the world in general."
The new media outlet will release information about current sociopolitical events in Azerbaijan. It also plans to distribute specialized information products on the development of various fields of the Azerbaijani economy. In addition, the agency will inform the international business community about future and existing upstream, downstream and transportation projects in the oil and gas sector not only in Azerbaijan but in the whole of the Caspian region, which is well on the way to becoming one of the world's leading suppliers of energy.
Interfax News Agency, a member of the international information group Interfax Information Services, was established in 1989. Since then, Interfax has become a recognized leader in the provision of accurate and reliable political and business information, plus information services from the emerging markets of Europe and Asia and for these regions.
Interfax has a global network of companies and offices in 30 countries. Some 1,000 employees in more than 70 bureaus produce more than 3,000 items of news per day.
The Interfax Group also supplies technology and software solutions for the financial markets, including market information and data distribution, and solutions for electronic trading systems. The Group's clients include most major corporations, investment funds, brokerages, banks, federal organizations and governmental offices throughout the world.

AzPetrol is the leading private fuel and energy company in Azerbaijan. It owns the country's biggest network of filling stations. In 2002, AzPetrol plans to add another 20-25 stations to its network.
